the Prayer Tower
On the 20th floor of City Tower, prayer continues around the clock. But the windows that surround our dormitories, hall and dining room are failing — letting in rain and wind each winter, and trapping the heat all summer.
The Need
Windows That Can No
Longer Be Opened
Over the years the windows of the Prayer Tower have been repaired by hand, again and again. Frames have been packed and painted over, handles refitted, gaps filled. What is left no longer seals and no longer opens safely.
In winter, water and wind come through the frames, so the windows have to be shut tight and left that way. In summer the same windows cannot be opened, and the rooms become very hot — for volunteers who sleep here, and for everyone who gathers in the hall to pray.
The dining room window is the most urgent. It can only be opened by swinging the whole pane wide, twenty floors above the street. It is not safe to use as it is.

The Work
Five Rooms, One Repair
The same need in each room: windows that seal against the winter, and that can be opened safely for air without the whole pane swinging wide.
Men's Dormitory
Where visiting intercessors sleep between prayer watches, through the heat of the Jerusalem summer.
Women's Dormitory
The same sealed windows. Fourteen beds across the two dormitories, for volunteers staying two weeks or more.
Dining Room
The window here can only be opened by swinging the full pane out over a twenty-storey drop. It needs to be made safe.
The Conference Hall
Where the congregation gathers to worship and pray. Without moving air, the hall becomes stifling in summer.
Greeting Room
The first room visitors from around the world step into when they arrive at the Prayer Tower.
Air Conditioning
The building's central system is old, and we are discussing the options with the building management. Repairing the windows is the step that helps most, soonest.
What Changes
One Change, Felt Every Day
Air Without Danger
Windows that open safely for ventilation let air move through the room without the pane being swung wide over the street below.
Bearable Summers
Volunteers keeping night watches, and everyone gathered in the hall, get moving air where at present there is none.
Dry Winters
Frames that seal properly keep the rain and wind outside, which we believe is where the water behind the damaged ceilings is getting in.
Why It Is Not Simple
Twenty Floors Up
The Prayer Tower sits on the 20th floor of City Tower. Every frame, every pane of glass and every tool has to be brought up through a working office building — and the old frames have to come back down the same way.
At that height nothing can simply be leaned out of a window to reach. The work needs proper access, and it needs to be planned as one project rather than a window mended here and there. That is what makes a repair which would be modest at street level a serious undertaking on the 20th floor.

The full scope is being surveyed and costed now. Rather than publish a figure we cannot yet stand behind, we are starting with the window that cannot wait and will share the measured costs on this page as soon as we have them.
